Iris scans for travellers

Hi tech scanning to be tested at Heathrow

December 2006

A finger print scanner was unveiled at Heathrow Airport recently which could lead to routine biometric scanning at Britain's airports. The move to include more high tech security measures will help control immigration and aid in the fight against terrorism. The high tech scanner enables passengers to skip boarding queues. The system, called miSense could eventually lead to biometric scanning and could lead on to passengers receiving iris and face scans.

The system is being piloted over the next 12 months. Liam Byrne, the immigration minister, said that he could invisage a time when biometric technology would be commonplace and did not see the scheme as a 'stand-alone scheme'. Stage two of the trial will involve travellers enroling in the system by registering 13 different pieces of biometric data which includes eye and face scans - the data would then be linked to their passport. They will then be issued with a membership card which will enable them to fast track through immigration. The miSense system will be trialed in Terminal 3 on passengers flying to Hong Kong and Dubai with Cathay Pacific and Emirates airlines.
