Concessions agreed with musicians regarding instruments

Musicians will be able to carry instruments on aircraft as luggage

October 2006

Musicians have persuaded the Government to allow them the ability to carry their instruments on to aircraft as they travel the globe attending concerts and recitals. New rules allow them to treat large instruments such as cellos as a second piece of hand luggage but they will have to buy another seat to accommodate it. Smaller instruments can be taken as carry on luggage.

The concession came after a campaign by the Musicians' Union. The size of of one bag that can be taken onboard has been increased from the size of a small laptop case to 22in by 17.5in by 9.89in. Woman business travellers will have to store their computer in the cargo hold if they want to take a handbag on as hand luggage. Musicians have had to turn down engagements abroad if due to the previous ban.
